How to use

Tips

  • JPG: for photos, opens everywhere

Every device, program and website opens JPG. Choose it to share photos or upload them to forms. It has no transparency.

  • PNG: for graphics and transparency

PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent areas. It suits logos, screenshots and drawings; photos become large.

  • WebP: smaller files for websites

WebP is usually much smaller than JPG and PNG and supports transparency. All current browsers show it, but some older programs do not.

  • AVIF: the smallest, but slow

AVIF often gives the smallest file for the same look. Converting takes longer, and some older browsers and programs cannot open it yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is converted in your browser, on your own device, and is not sent anywhere. The page only downloads the converter itself the first time you use it, and the AVIF encoder only when you choose AVIF.

Can I convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Not yet. Until then, you can set the iPhone camera to “Most Compatible” under Settings → Camera → Formats, so new photos are saved as JPG.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default). PNG, WebP and AVIF keep transparency.

Which quality should I choose?

The default of 90 keeps photos very close to the original. Lower values give smaller files, so check the preview before you download. PNG has no quality setting, because it keeps every pixel.

Is there a size limit?

Files can be up to 50 MB. Images up to 100 megapixels work on a computer, and up to 16.7 on phones and tablets, because mobile browsers have less memory for images.

Can I convert several images at once?

This page converts one image at a time. For many images, use “Batch processing”: it converts all of them to the same format, and you get all results in one ZIP file.
